ABOUT US
Kiddie Korral is open from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. We serve breakfast, healthy snacks and hot, balanced lunches, with a state-approved menu. We offer pre-school (at no additional charge) to our 3-5 year olds. We offer transportation for school-age children before and after school. Unlike most other centers, we charge only for the days your child is in attendance. Also, we offer discounts for families with more than one child enrolled.
HISTORY
Kiddie Korral was established in 1973 by Doris and Harry McGookey as a family enterprise. Our original location, at 1535 Milan Road, opened in May of 1973 and served ten families. From the start, Kiddie Korral was unique in that it not only offered working families child care, but also offered pre-school at no extra charge. This was based on the family’s strong belief in the importance of education; that education should begin at an early age, and that no child should be denied the opportunity to attend pre-school.
To this end, we incorporated educational programs into our daily schedule and developed a separate pre-school, taught by certified teachers. We feel this program is one of Kiddie Korral’s greatest strengths and accomplishments. We strive continually to improve our programs.
We began our after-school program in the fall of 1974. In June of 1978, we opened our second center at 1809 E. Perkins Avenue. By that time, Kiddie Korral was providing before and after school care and transporting school-age children in our vans. Our staff had grown from three child care professionals to forty-five. In May of 1990, our new center at 315 W. Follett St. replaced our Milan Road location.
Over these many years, we have continued to expand and update both our physical facilities and our programs. As an example, we now offer weekly Spanish lessons and computer-based learning activities for our 3-5 year olds. We are proud to say that, since opening in 1973, we have touched the lives of literally thousands of Sandusky area children. But, from the beginning, our goal has remained the same – to provide a safe place where children love to come and learn; a place where parents feel comfortable leaving their children.
